Charles was the son of Charles and Harriet Hardy. His father, a miner, was born in 1869 at Huthwaite and his mother in 1871 at Hoveringham. They were married C1892 and had four children, two dying in infancy prior to 1911. Charles's surviving sibling was Percy b.1894 Huthwaite and they lived at 57 Blackwell Road Huthwiate.
He was a farm boy.

Charles enlisted in Derby. He was posted missing on 17th April 1917 in Palestine and presumed killed on 19th April. He is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial Israel Panel 18
Mansfield Reporter and Sutton Times – 29th. June, 1917. The Vicar of Huthwaite reported that he had made enquiries through Red Cross and St. John's regarding Private C.T. Hardy (Blackwell Road) 201350 1-5th.Scots Fusiliers, missing since April 17th. No news had been received and he had not been noted on prisoner lists searched
