William Henry was born in 1899 the son of Henry George a coachman and Lucy Edith Lawes née Smith of 11 Mabel Terrace, Birkin Avenue, Hyson Green. Henry George was born in 1871 at Stockwell, Surrey, Lucy Edith Smith was born in 1877 at Great Yarmouth, married on 12th August 1898 at Brixton, Surrey they went on to have 6 children, sadly three died in infancy or early childhood, their other surviving children were Robert George and Rosie Edith In 1911 the family lived at 21 Lenton Street and later 11 Mabel Terrace Birkin Avenue (both Hyson Green Nottingham) Henry George was 40 yrs and an unemployed coachman,

Private William Henry Lawes enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 27109 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died of wounds on 30th August 1918 whilst serving with the 63rd Company Machine Gun Corps. He is buried at Bagneux British Cemetery, Gezaincourt
