John Edward was born in 1894 in Tibshelf and was the son of Joseph a coal miner and Mary Ann Holmes nee Ashmore , his father Joseph was born in Pilsley Derbyshire in 1866 and his mother MaryAnn was born in 1865 in Fullard , they got married in 1885 in the Mansfield Registration district, they had 3 children , 1 sadly died in infancy prior to 1911. Their children were Joseph Henry b1887 Tibself , john Edward b1894 Tibshelf and Alfred b1911, In 1911 they lived at Woodend Huthwaite.
He was a pit pony driver.

John enlisted on 2nd March 1916 in Nottingham ,he gave his age as 24 yrs and 8 months his address as Whiteboro, Wood End, Huthwaite his next of kin as his father Joseph of the same address, his occupation as that of a coal miner and his religion as Church OF England. He was placed into the reserves the following day. he was eventually mobilised and called up on 13th May 1918 and posted on 15th May 1918 to the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was wounded in action , receiving a gun shot wound to the abdomen on 18th September 1918 and treated at the 43 Casualty clearing station, France but died from his wounds the following day 19th September 1918 and was buried in Thilloy Road Cemetery, Beaulehcourt, France grave reference A 38
