Harry Betteridge was born in Doe Leo, Derbyshire in 1892 , he was baptised in Ault Hucknall Derbyshire on 2nd October 1892 was the son of James Betteridge Ingram a coal miner and Ann Ingram nee Parkin. His father James was born in 1863 in Newhall Derbyshire and his mother Ann was born in Ripley Derbyshire in 1865, they married in December 1882 in the Mansfield Registration district. They had a large famiy of 9 children , sadly 1 died in infancy prior to the 1911 census, their children were : - Thomas J b1883 Stanton Hill, Ada b1888 Sutton in Ashfield, Violet b1890 Skegby, Harry b1893 Doe Lea, Gertrude b1899 Skegby, James b1901 Sutton in Ashfield, Anna b1903 Skegby and William b1905 Skegby. In 1911 census the family are shown living at 54 Newcastle Street Huthwaite, and are James 48 yrs a coal miner , living with his wife Ann 46 yrs and their children Violet 21 yrs , Harry 18 yrs a coal miner, Gertrude 12 yrs, James 10 yrs Anna 8 yrs and William 6 yrs.
He was a miner.

Harry enlisted at Sutton in Ashfield , he gave his place of birth as Heath, Derbyshire and his place of residence as Huthwaite. He originally served with the service number 815795 in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) but later transferred to the 7th battalion Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment . He was killed in action on 28th March 1918. He has no known grave , his name is commemorated on the Poziers memorial on the Somme.
