Charles Harold Southern was the son of the late Charles Henry Southern a coal merchant and Ellen Mary Southern née Ball of 71 Fisher Street Hyson Green Nottingham. Charles Henry was born in 1854 at Radford, he died in 1904 aged 49 yrs, Ellen Mary Ball was also born in 1854 at Nottingham, they married in 1878 at Radford and went on to have 6 children, In 1911 Ellen Mary Southern is living at 27 Harcourt Road, Sherwood Rise, she is 56 yrs a widow and is living with her married son Percy Ball Southern 31 yrs a lace warehouse man and his family. Charles Harold Southern having joined the Army is living in barracks in Gibralter or Cyprus and is 26 yrs of age , he is a sapper serving with the 15th Company Royal Engineers.
He was a plumber and career soldier.

Lance Corporal Charles Harold Southern, enlisted on 20th August 1906, at Nottingham, giving his age as 21 yrs and 5 months, he was a plumber, he served with the 31st Army Troops Company Royal Engineers. Mobilised for war on 12th August 1914 he landed in France on 13th December 1914, he was killed in action on 22nd November 1915 and is buried in Bethune Town Cemetery
Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 22nd November 1916:- “SOUTHERN. – In ever affectionate remembrance of our dear brother Harold, who fell in action November 22nd, 1915.
