Herbert Harold Spencer was born in 1898 in Radford and was the son of Joseph a coal miner and Hannah Spencer née Anthony of 449 Berridge Road Hyson Green Nottingham. His father Joseph was born in 1876 in Sneinton, his mother Hannah Elizabeth Anthony was born in 1878 in Arnold, they were married in 1895 in Nottingham and went on to have 7 children : Margaret Ann b1896, Herbert Harold b1898 Radford, Hannah Elizabeth b1900 Kimberley, Daisy Ann b1903 Kimberley, Joseph b1905 Basford, Lyndsey b1908 Hyson Green and John b1910 Hyson Green. in the 1911 census the family are living at 4 Scotholme Street, Hyson Green and are shown as Joseph 35 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Hannah 33 yrs and their children , Margaret Ann 15 yrs a cigarette packet bender, Herbert Harold a jacker off lace maker, Hannah 11 yrs scholar, Daisy Ann 8 yrs a scholar, Joseph 6 yrs a scholar, Lyndsey 3 yrs and John 6 moths.

15th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Sgt. Herbert Spencer, enlisted in Nottingham and served with 15th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, he was killed in action 20th July 1916. He is buried in Guillemont Road Cemetery, Guillemont.
In memoriam published 17th July 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “SPENCER. – In loving memory of our dear son and brother, Sergeant Herbert Spencer, Sherwood Foresters, of 449, Berridge-road, who was killed in action July 20th, 1915.
