William Fletcher was born in 1888 at Basford, Nottingham and was the son of the late Edwin a coal miner and Eliza Fletcher née Gent of 21, Browns Croft, Old Basford, Nottingham. His father Edwin was born in 1847 at Langley Mill, he died in 1902 at Nottingham aged 55 yrs, his mother Eliza Gent was born in 1852 at South Normanton, they were married in 1870 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield Registration district, they went on to have the following children, Mary b1876, Elizabeth b1877, Lily b1881, Annie b1884, Thomas b1886, William b1888 and Ethel b1892. In the 1911 census the family are living at 21 Browns Croft , Old Basford and are shown as Eliza Fletcher 59 yrs a widow, she is living with her children, Thomas 25 yrs a lace dresser, William 22 yrs a lace maker designer and Ehtel 20 yrs a lace dresser. William married his wife Jessie Norwell (born 21st August 1888 ) in 1913 at Nottingham, they lived at 34 Independent Street, Radford, Nottingham, they went on to have two children, William born 31st January 1914 and Laura 21st June 1915. Following his death his widow Jessie was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence a week which commenced on 5th February 1917. His widow re married Frederick Kightley on 23rd February 1918.

Private William Fletcher enlisted on 1st December 1911 at Nottingham he gave his age as 23 yrs and 2 months, he lived at 21 Browns Croft, Old Basford, Nottingham, he was a lace hand. He served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went to France 25th February 1915 and was selected for the Brigade Mining Section 18th May 1915. He was killed in action, 1st July 1916, during the attack on Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He is buried at Foncquevillers Military Cemetery
