John Burgess was the son of John George and Mary Ann (née Buswell) Burgess. John George, was born in 1867 in Luddenham, Leicestershire, Mary Ann Burgess in 1869 at Basford. Married in 1887, they had nine children eight surviving infancy - Alice Ethel b.1888 Nottingham, Gladys Esther b.1890 Nottingham, Arthur b.1891 Nottingham, George b.1893 Nottingham (killed in action 10/3/1916), John b.1897 West Bridgford, Albert b.1901 Carrington and Doris b.1905 Carrington. In 1911, they lived at 5, Milner Road, Sherwood. George was a butcher, Alice Ethel a dress maker and Arthur a lace curtain draughtsmen.
He was a lace cutain designer.

17th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
John Burgess Buswell enlisted at Nottingham on 3rd June 1915. He gave his age as 19 yrs and 10 months (this was incorrect as he was born in 1897). He was posted to the 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters and promoted corporal on 26th July 1915 and sergeant on 17th August 1915. He landed in France on 6th March 1916 and was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme. Thiepval Memorial
