Sullivan volunteered for service on August 8, 1914, and after training he was drafted to France the following year. He was formerly No. 7973 in the Royal Army Service Corps, but was later posted to 'D' Company, 9th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, and whilst with them he won the Military Medal for gallantry. He was involved in the fighting round Monchy le Preux and was killed in action on 26/09/1917. He was buried at Monchy British Cemetery, Grave Reference: I N 1
Nottingham Evening Post, Deaths 9/10/1917: 'Sullivan. Killed in action September 26th. Douglas D'Arcy William Sullivan (Military Medal), Royal Fusiliers, aged 20 the beloved second son of Mr and Mrs Sullivan, 81, Goldsmith Street. Duty nobly done.'
