He was the son of Harry and Emma Grundy and the brother of Emma, Lillian, George and Arthur Grundy. In 1901 they lived at 4 Raven Terrace and in 1911 at 1 Chelsea Street (both New Basford Nottingham).

Horace Grundy enlisted in Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) on 27 May 1915, giving his age as 19 years (he was actually 17 years). He was 5 feet 3 inches tall. He gave his next of kin as Mother - Mrs Rose Emma Grundy, 57 Gawthorne Street Basford. He was posted to the 16th battalion (Chatsworth Rifles) and went to France with them on 5 March 1916. On 9 June 1916 he was sent to 11th Casualty Clearing Station (CCS) for treatment, 10th to 133 Field Ambulance, 15th and 25th to 11th CCS before eventually being sent to 2 London CCS. On 11 July 1916 he was in No1 General Hospital with D.A.H - Disordered Action of the Heart. He was then sent on the Hospital Ship Newhaven to England to No 1 General Hospital based in Epsom. He remained in England until 14 May 1917. He was back in France, at the Infantry Brigade base on 15 May and posted to 1st battalion on 9 June 1917. On 24 August 1917 he was appointed, unpaid Lance Corporal. On 17th November the battalion was sent to the Ypres Salient and on 20th found themselves in the front line just north of Passchendaele. The battles of 3rd Ypres were over but the war continued. Three men were killed on 20th, with casualties of 90 in total, and it is likely that Horace received his Gun shot wounds (GSW) to the arm, right leg and ankle during this day. He was moved down the casualty evacuation chain to Etaples but died of his wounds on 27 November. He was then buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, grave XXX.N.3A; John Morse
