Arthur Whatmore was born in 1894 and was the son of Walter a miner contractor and Lucy Whatmore née Goodhall of Mansfield Road, Eastwood. His father was born in 1871 at Harby, Nottinghamshire and his mother Lucy Anne Goodhall was born in 1873 at Eastwood, they were married in 1893 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District. They had afurther son William Henry b1900 in Eastwood. In the 1911 census the family are living at Mansfield Road, Eastwood and are shown as Walter 40 yrs a miner/contractor he is living with his wife Lucy 38 yrs and their children, Arthur 17 yrs a coal miner and William Henry 11 yrs.
He was a miner at Moorgreen Colliery.

He was combed out during the Spring of 1918 and served only a two weeks at the front with 7th Bn Leicestershire Regiment.(see letter)
