John William Heath was born in 1894 the son of William a lace worker and Emma Heath (née Calladine). William was born at 1862 in Radford, Emma Calladine in 1862 in Nottingham. Married in 1893, they had three children - Edwin b.1892, John William b.1894 and Joshua b.1897. In 1901, the family, including Emma’s daughter Florence Lee, a 16 year old cotton winder, lived at 7, Harrison’s Row, St Peter’s Street, Radford. William had died by 1911 and Emma was living at 1, Sinnet Place, Ilkeston. John William married Hannah Elizabeth Dennis on 2nd August 1913 at the Nottingham Registry Office. Their son Alfred was born 31st December 1913 in Nottingham and they lived at 6 Babworth Street, Carrington. With effect from 15/2/1916, Hannah received a weekly pension of 15/- (fifteen shillings). She later lived at 20, Market Place, Carrington, Nottingham.

John William Heath enlisted on 10th October 1911 at Nottingham. Enlisting into the Special Reserve he joined the 4th battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. He was mobilised on 6th August 1914 and went out to France on 11th November 1914. Although his burial in Sanctuary Wood is recorded in his service record the grave was lost and he is now commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
