Walter Gregory was born in 1876 at Middlewood, Yorkshire. He married May Gregory, nee Walton at St. Leodegarious Parish Church, Basford, Nottingham on 31/01/1903. They had one son, John Walton Gregory, born on 22/02/ 1907 at Carrington, Nottingham. The family lived at 26 Sherbrooke Road, Carrington, Nottingham before moving to 7 Hawthorne Terrace, Carrington.

4th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Pte. Gregory attested on 07/12/1915 at Nottingham but was not mobilised until 07/06/1917 at Derby, where he joined the 4th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters Depot. He was training in Sunderland when he developed pneumonia and died in military hospital on 24/01/1918, another victim of the great influenza pandemic sweeping through Europe at that time. His body was not brought home, but buried at Sunderland (Bishopwearmouth) Cemetery. 3.A.2206
In memoriam published 24th January 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “GREGORY. – In loving remembrance of Walter, private, Sherwood Foresters, died January 24th, 1918.
