William Henry Cherry was born in 1889 his birth was recorded in the Rotherham Registration district and was the son of the late William and Sarah Elizabeth Cherry. His mother later re married in 1918 to become Sarah Elizabeth Bingham, she lived at 15, Lammas Street and later 173 WterwayStreet, both in the Meadows, Nottingham. His probate was proven with will on 9th November 1917 at Nottingham and shows him as William Henry Cherry of Ryalls Farm, Eakring, Private in H.M.Army , died 31st October 1916 at Lord Derbys War Hospital, Warrington, his effects of £123. 12 shillings and 2 pence were left to Sarah Elizabeth Bingham widow (his mother)

Private William Henry Cherry was called up for service on 29th March 1916 at Mansfield and reported to the local depot at Derby on 30th March 1916. He was posted to the West Riding Regiment and embarked from Folkstone on 2nd August 1916 arriving at Boulogne the same day, he arrived at Etaples base camp on 3rd August 1916. He was wounded in action a gun shot wound to his right arm on 17th September 1916 and admitted to no 2 general hospital. He was returned to England on 25th September 1916 he was treated and died in at Lord Derby's War Hospital, Warrington on 31st October 1916. He is buried at Warrington Cemetery, Lancashire.
