George was born in Retford in 1894 and was the son of George Cooke, of 11, Beardsalls Rd., Retford, Notts.

George enlisted in Lincoln and gave his address as Retford and his birth place as Retford . he served with the 7th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment and first saw service in a theatre of war in France on 28th July 1915 (medal index card) .He was wounded and returned to England and was treated at the Military Hospital in Eastbourne,however he died from his wounds on 11th November 1916 and is buried in Eastbourne (Ocklynge) Cemetery, Sussex grave reference z558 Pte G Cook Retford Times 17 Nov 1916 The death took place in Upperstone Red Cross Hospital, Eastbourne on Saturday last, of Pte G Cook, Lincolns, eldest son of Mr Cook 46 Beardsall Row, Retford. Deceased, who was seriously wounded at St Eloi on March 4th, had been in hospital ever since.He bore his terrible sufferings with true British stoicism and cheerfulness, and, as a nurse at the hospital writes:- “He is a living sermon to us all with his brightness and forgetfulness of self. Certainly he has won the V C a dozen times over the way he has borne his sufferings the time he had been here.” The poor lad who was 22 years of age, was laid to rest at Eastbourne on Tuesday
