Ernest was born on 20th February 1897 at Eccleshall Bierlow, and was the son of Fred Etches and Emily Eaitch, (nee Collingburn) His father Fred died in 1898 and his mother Emily remarried in 1900 in East Retford to Charles Edward Potter . By the 1901 census the family are living at 68 Grove Street,Retford , at the address on the night of the census were Charles and Emily , and their three children Lily, Harold and Ernest born 1892 Sheffield. By the 1911 census the family are living at 14 Humber Street, Retford and at the house on the night of the census were Charles and Emily and their children ,Lilly - Harold - Edith and Ernest who is 14 years of age and a clerk in borough surveyors office. In 1916 he married Nora Kedge and they resided at "Exton," 3, Danesbury Avenue, Southborne, Bournemouth.

Ernest served with the 1/17th County of London Regiment (Poplar & Stepney Rifles battalion.) His medal card shows he first entered a theatre of war on 16th July 1917 in France, he died of wounds on 2nd November 1918 and is buried in Laventine Military Cemetery, La Gorgue, Nord, France.
