Person Details
Henry was the son of Henry and Mary Ann Scrimshaw nee Needham. Henry snr was born in Nottingham in about 1861 and was the son of George and Harriett Scrimshaw who were living at 10 Freeman Street, Nottingham, at the time of the 1861 Census. Mary Ann Needham was also born in Nottingham, birth registered 1875 (J/F/M Nottingham). Henry and Mary Ann were married on 17 December 1894 (O/N/D Nottingham) at St John's, Leenside, Nottingham. By 1911 they had had eight children all of whom survived, all the children were born in Nottingham: Elizabeth b. 1895 (J/A/S Nottingham) bap. 31 July 1895 St Nottingham, Henry b. 1896 (registered 1897 J/F/M Nottingham) bap. 23 December 1896 St John Nottingham, George b. 19 December 1898 (registered 1899 J/F/M Nottingham), William b. 1901 (J/A/S Nottingham), Charles b. 1903 (O/N/D Nottingham), Thomas b. 1905 (O/N/D Nottingham), Lilian b. 1907 (O/N/D Nottingham) and Arthur b. 1909 (O/N/D Nottingham). All the registrations give the mother's maiden name, Needham. There were three further registrations of birth (Scrimshaw/Needham) after 1911: Hilda b. 1911 (O/N/D Nottingham), Sydney E [Ernest] b. 1917 (J/A/S Nottingham, death index b. 20 July 1917 d. 1993 O/N/D Rushcliffe) and Ivy b. 1919 (J/A/S Nottingham), although there is no other evidence that these were Henry and Mary Ann's children. At the time of Elizabeth's baptism in July 1895 Henry and Mary Ann were living at 2 Parker's Yard, Nottingham, and in December 1896, when Henry was baptised, at 56 Red Lion Street, Nottingham. However, by 1901 Henry and Mary Ann were living at 124 Manvers Street, Nottingham, with their three children, Elizabeth (5), Henry (4) and George (2). The famiy had moved to 12 King's Meadow Road, Meadows, by 1911. Henry (50) was a bricklayer. All eight children were living at home: Elizabeth (15) a maker-up (frilling trade), Henry (14) an errand boy, George (12), William (9), Charles (7), Thomas (5), Lilian (3) and Arthur (1). Mary Ann probably died in December 1924 (burial 2 January 1925, death registered 1925 J/F/M Nottingham) and Henry probably died in February 1930, (burial 24 February 1930, registered J/F/M Nottingham). It is possible that Arthur, who had been born in 1910, died on 17 March 1929 (J/F/M Nottingham) following a road accident. The incident was reported in the Nottingham Evening Post on 18 March 1929: ‘Local Happenings. Bridgford Bricklayer’s Death. Arthur Scrimshaw, 19, a bricklayer, of 2, Rosebery-avenue, West Bridgford, who on Saturday was knocked off his bicycle at the junction of Welbeck-road and Loughborough-road, as the result of a collision with a motor lorry, succumbed to his injuries at the General Hospital yesterday.’ (www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk) George married Florence Shaw (b. 12 April 1902) in 1923 (O/N/D Nottingham). In 1939 at the time of the England & Wales Register they were living at 181 Rupert Street, Meadows. George was a bricklayer. He and Florence had two sons, Victor Charles (b. 11 August 1924) who was a milk bottler (d. 1996 A/M/J Nottingham), and Kenneth Edward (b. 27 March 1926) who was still at school (d. 2004 O/N/D Nottingham). George died on 4 June 1978 (A/M/J Nottingham).
In 1911 he was an errand boy.
