John William Ward was born in 1887 at Sheffield and was the son of William Charles a coal miner hewer and Mary Ann Ward née Smith of 41 Warsop Vale, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. His father William Charles was born in 1862 at Sheffield, his mother Mary Ann Smith was born in 1866 in Derbyshire, they were married in 1885 their marriage was recorded in the Sheffield registration district, they went on to have the following children, John William b1887 Sheffield, Wilson Ward b1890 Normanton Springs Charles b1893 Intake, Nellie b1895 Normanton Springs, Norman b1897 Intake, and Ann b1898 Normanton Springs. In the 1911 census the family are living at 41 Warsop Vale, Mansfield and are shown as William Charles 49 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 45 yrs and their children, John William 24 yrs a coal miner road layer, Charles 18 yrs a coal miner rope worker, Norman 14 yrs a coal miner clipper and Ann 13 yrs a scholar.

12th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private John William Ward enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Warsop, he served with the 12th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 30th August 1915. He died of wounds on 29th March 1918 and is buried at Namps-Au-Val British Cemetery
