William Allen Webster was born in 1897 at Carrington and was the son of William a brick layers labourer and Sarah Ann Webster née Potter of 25 Vernon Ave, Old Basford. His father William was born in 1873 at Nottingham, his mother Sarah Ann Potter was born in 1873 at Carrington, they were married in 1892 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 5 children, Lily b1892, Arthur b1894, William b1896, Ernest b1899 and Minnie b1900. In the 1911 census the family are living at Kipper Street, East Street, Nottingham, they are shown as William 38 yrs a brick layers labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah 38 yrs and their children, Arthur 16 yrs a news boy, William 14 yrs a litho printer, Ernest 12 yrs. His mother Sarah was to die in 1913 aged 40 yrs, his married sister Lily Morley of 30 Cowley Street was his legatee.

1/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private William Allen Webster enlisted on 16th February 1915 at Nottingham, he gave his address as 30 Cowley Street, Old Basford and his age as 19 yrs. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. On 27th October 1915 he was posted to the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and embarked for France on the same day. He was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
