James Albert Cutts was born in 1898 at Lenton and was the son of the late James (senior) Cutts a gas stoker and Annie Cutts née Pembury of 70 Bathley Street Meadows Nottingham. His father James(senior) was born in 1873 at Retford (he died in 1909 aged 37 yrs) and his mother Annie Pembury was born in 1871 at Lenton, they were married in 1895 at Nottingham and went on to have 6 children, one sadly died in infancy their surviving children were, James b1898, Annie b18999, Charles Henry b1900, George William b1907, and Harold b1909, all the children were born at Lenton. In the 1911 census the family are living at 3 Cloister Street, Abbey Street, Nottingham and are shown as Annie Cutts 40 yrs a widow and charwoman, she is living with her children, James 13 yrs a paper maker, Annie 12 yrs a scholar, Charles Henry 11 yrs, George William 4 yrs and Harold 2 yrs.
In the 1911 census he is shown as a paper maker.

16th Trench Mortar Bty Royal Field Artillery
Gunner James Albert Cutts enlisted at Ilkeston and served with the 16th Trench Mortar Battery, Royal Field Artillery. He was killed in action on 10th November 1916 and is buried in Lalaiterie Military Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, Belgium 7.B.9
Obituaries published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 10th November 1917:- CUTTS. – In affectionate remembrance of Gnr. J. Cutts, who made the supreme sacrifice November 10th, 1916. Greater love hath no man.
