William Henry Atkin was born 1893 he was the son of Charles a general labourer and Mary Atkin née Gadsby of 107, North Gate, New Basford, Nottingham. Charles was born in 1865 at Bailey, Derbyshire, Mary Gadsby was born in 1875 at Basford, they were married in 1892 at Nottingham, they had 8 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 71 Lambert Street, Hyson Green Charles 46 is a general labourer, he is living with his wife Mary 36 yrs and their children including William 18 yrs a hosiery hand. William married Clara Ellen Syer (born 5th September 1890) in 1916 at Nottingham his widow was living with her mother at Weston Street, St Mary's , Spalding when she was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 7th May 1917.

16th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private William Henry Atkin enlisted at Nottingham on 13th May 1915 he served with the 16th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went to France 6th March 1916 and was killed in action, 10th October 1916, during the attack on the Schwaben Redoubt, near Thiepval, France during the Battle of the Somme. He is buried at Connaught Cemetery, Thiepval, France. Plot 10, Row E, Grave 2.
