Person Details
New Whittington Derbyshire
He was the son of Arthur and Sarah Ann Cox. Arthur was born in Staveley, Derbyshire, and Sarah Ann in Lincoln. They are probably the Arthur Cox and Sarah Ann Staniforth who were married in 1889 (O/N/D) in the Chesterfield (Derbyshire) registration district. They had twelve children of whom nine survived infancy; Sarah Ellen (b. 1890, Whittington), Frank (b. 1892, Whittington), Arthur (b. abt. 1894, Whittington), Philip (b. 1896, Whittington), Elsie (b. 1899, Whittington, bap. 15 February 1899), Harriet (b. Whittington, bap. 8 March 1903), Christiana (b. 1905, Mansfield), Selina (b. 1907, Mansfield) and Edith (b. 1910, Mansfield). In 1891 Arthur and Sarah with their 10 month old daughter, Sarah Ellen, were living on High Street, New Whittington, Derbyshire. Arthur was a coal miner. They were still living in Whittington (120 High Street) in 1901 and now had five children: Sarah (10), Frank (9), Arthur (7), Philip (5) and Elsie (2). By 1911 the family had moved to Mansfield and were living at West Cliffe Cottage Fairholme Drive, Mansfield. Arthur and Sarah's nine children were all at home on the night of the census: Sarah Ellen, a millhand/cotton spinner, Frank, Arthur, Philip, Elsie, Harriet (8), Christiana (6), Selina (4) and Edith (under 1). Arthur's father was killed in an accident at Pleasley Colliery on 18 January 1932 aged 62. His mother died on 20 August 1953 aged 82.
In 1911 Arthur was a colliery pony driver. His father was a miner and his brothers old enough to work were also employed at the pit.
