Edward Clarke was born in Nottingham 1898. His parents were Edward and Martha (née Carter) who married in Nottingham Register Office on 22 March 1887. Edward senior made his living as an ale brewer while Martha worked at home making lace products by hand. In 1901 Edward and Martha and their eldest child, Edward, were resident at 106 Carlton Road Nottingham. Edward and Martha had more children over the following years, Eliza born 22/4/1903, Rose Ellen 17/3/1906, Jane 31/12/1907, Elizabeth 22/5/1913 and John 25/7/1915 who died age 8 months on 24th October 1915 1911 saw them with a change of address at 1 Scotland Yard, Nottingham and 13 year old Edward junior was still at school.

Only basic details are to hand for Edward Clarke, that is that he enlisted at Nottingham, went France, (awarded Military Medal, no known citation) and was killed in action in the Somme region and buried in the Templeux-Le-Guerard British Cemetery, France. However, his father also joined the Army being attested on 27 September 1916. He joined the Army Service Corps and died in East Africa. More details are available on the Nottingham St Mary's Church memorial where both father and son are commemorated. So Martha Clarke lost three of her family in a space of 3 years her son Edward died on 25 August 1917, her husband Edward died on 8 February 1918 and her son John died of pneumonia on 24 October 1915
