He was the son of Mary Ann Dale and the brother of William, Charlie and Jane Dale. He was the husband of Evelyn (née Mottishead) Dale and the father of Ethel May and Elizabeth Doris Dale. On 6/3/1916 Evelyn and her two children were awarded 19 shillings per week pension. Mrs E Dale of 16 Clifford Street Radford Nottingham, sent a letter to the War Office asking for her husband’s medal, scroll and plaque. Following his death his wife remarried and became, Evelyn Hobson of 8 Kirkham Place Birley Street Sheffield.

John Henry Dale enlisted in 4th Special Reserve battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) on 11 January 1911. He was mobilised on the outbreak of war and after training posted to 1st Battalion in France. He entered theatre on 27 December 1914 and arrived at the battalion on the 3 January 1915. John Henry was killed in action on the 11th March during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle. At 10 am on 11th March 'C' company advanced north east through the orchard on the left of the line and occupied some broken down houses. The battalion came under constant shelling all day. At 4 pm, 'D' Company charged the enemy's breastworks but suffering heavy losses from machine gun fire were forced to retire. At some point John Henry was killed and he has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial France. John Morse
