He was born in 1876 and married Elizabeth Ann Guyler (born 1877 in Newthorpe) at Nottingham in 1904. They had two children both born at Nottingham - William Frederick Whate (1906) and Mary Lucy Whate (1911). In 1911 the family lived at 118 Kings Meadow Road Meadows Nottingham.
In 1911 he was employed as a railway engine stoker.

He enlisted at Nottingham and landed in France on 26th August 1915. He died of wounds and buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension Bailleul France. Research by Peter Gillings
