Father: Henry Clarke, born in 1846 at Chesterfield, Derbyshire and working as a grocer and coal dealer. Mother: Eliza Clarke, born in 1848 at Chesterfield and working as a grocer. Joseph William was their only child.The family lived at 12 Leenside, Nottingham.
Jospeh William worked as a french polisher and a wood carrier.

Pte. Clarke was called up for service and following training he was drafted to France. In early 1917 the belief grew that the Germans were preparing to evacuate Lens. This proved to be untrue and heavy German artillery barrages hit the British lines daily. Casualties were high and included Pte. Clarke wo was killed in action. He was buried at the Canadian Cemetery No. 2 at Neuville St. Vaast.
