John Charles Groom was born in 1890 the son of Thomas a blacksmith at a sewage farm and Sarah Ann Groom née Groom and the brother of Dean, William and Robert Groom. Thomas was born in 1858 at Polebrook, Northamptonshire, Sarah Ann Groom was born in 1862 at West Deeping, married in 1885 at Huntingdon they went on to have 9 children, one died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at Stoke Bardolph Nottinghamshire. Thomas is 53 yrs a blacksmith at a sewage farm and John Charles is 20 yrs and a farm labourer.
He was a farm labourer in 1911.

Rifleman John Charles Groom enlisted at Nottingham he entered the theatre of war 22 July 1915 in France. He was killed in action on 18th March 1916 and is buried at Essex Farm Cemetery, Belgium. He was eligible for the 1915 star, the Victory and British medals.
