Walter Hanson was born in 1895 at Somerville, Boston, Massachusetts and was the son of Fred a house painter and Harriet Ann Hanson née Smith of 92 Barnby Gate, Newark. His father Fred was born in 1868 at Newark and his mother Harriett Ann Smith was born in 1868 at Oldham in Lancashire , they were married C1891 (possibly in the USA ) they had 5 children sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Walter b1895 in the USA, Ethel Annie b1898 Newark, Elsie Annie b1898 Newark and Winifred b1909 Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 92 Barnby Gate Newark Nottinghamshire and are shown as Fred 43 yrs a house painter, he is living with his wife Harriett 43 yrs and their children Walter 16 yrs an apprentice cabinet maker, Ethel Annie 13 yrs a scholar, Elise Harriett 2 yrs , also living with them is Winifred Hanson 11 yrs b1900 in London a niece.
He was an a cabinet maker at Mssrs Ford and Son of Newark. He was a teacher for 3 yrs at the Charles Street Wesleyan Sunday School.

Sapper Walter Hanson enlisted at Newark on 16th November 1914 , he served with 'Z' Special Company, Royal Engineers. He was killed in action on 6th May 1917 and is buried at Beaulencourt British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
Article published 25th May 1917 in the Newark Herald :- Resided in Wood Street, Newark. As a boy attended the Wesleyan Day school and was also a teacher for three years in the Charles Street Wesleyan Sunday school. Prior to the war he served his apprenticeship as a cabinet maker to Messrs. Ford & Son, until enlistment on Nov. 16th, 1914. Killed on the night of May 6th by a large shell.
