He was the son of Maria Chambers, born 1858 in Nottingham, widowed and working as a lace dresser. He was the brother of Lily Chambers, born in 1881 at Nottingham, working as a machinist. The family lived at 2 Oxford Square, Canal Street. Robert married in January 1908 and lived at 61 Canal Street Nottingham although his wife's name was missing from the census return.
Robert Chambers worked as a night soil man before becoming a general labourer. Listed as 'Robert' on CWGC

Chambers was called up to serve and following training he was drafted to France. He served as no. R4/068227 in the Royal Army Service Corps before being transferred to 10th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment. He was killed in action on 01/07/1917 south of Ypres at a quiet period in the line and was buried at Somer Farm Cemetery Grave Reference: A 25
