William Marshal married Florence Margaret Maples in Lincoln in 1900 (A/M/J Lincoln). Florence was born on 23 March 1877 (A/M/J Lincoln), the daughter of John and Jane Maples. She was baptised in Lincoln St Nicholas on 22 April 1877. William and Florence had two daughters, Ella b. 21 August 1900 (J/A/S Nottingham) and Ida b. 25 October 1904 (O/N/D Nottingham). In 1901 William (23), a hairdresser, and Florence (24), were living at 62 Lamcote Street, Meadows, Nottingham, with their first child, Ella (7 months). By 1911 they were living at 240 Arkwright Street, Meadows. William (33) was now a hairdresser on his own account. Florence (34), Ella (10) and Ida (6) were all at home on the night of the census. At the time of William's death in 1918 his family was living at 19 Lamcote Street, Meadows. Florence died in 1924 (December Nottingham) aged 47; she was buried on 4 December. Neither of William's two daughters appear to have married as there are records of the death of an Ella Marshall at the age of 81 in 1981 (December Nottingham) and Ida Marshall in 1982 (March Nottingham) aged 77.

24th Bde. William was killed in Italy in a motor accident. He was buried in Montecchio Precalcino Communal Cemetery Extnsion in the Province of Vicenza, Italy (grave ref. Plot 9, Row C. grave 13). He qualififed for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
