David was born in 1868 in Southwell and Hannah Smith in 1869 at Gotham. Married in the Loughborough Registration District in 1869, they had seven children. John Joseph’s five siblings to survive infancy were Frances Eliza Elizabeth b.1892 in Derby, Annie Mary Hannah b.1898 Mansfield, May Elsie Maria b.1902 Mansfield, Edith Lucy Jane b.1904 Mansfield, and Walter Ernest William b.1906 in Nottingham. In 1901 they lived at 37 Duke Street Mansfield and in 1911 at 62 King’s Meadow Road Meadows Nottingham.

1/24th Bn (The Queen's) John White enlisted at Nottingham serving initially (107357) in the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment) before being posted to the London Regiment.
Aubers Ridge British Cemetery Grave Reference: VI F 12 Death notice published 29th March 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- ‘WHITE.-- Killed in action Oct. 14th, Pte. J. J. H. White of 1/24 London Regt., the dearly beloved son of David and Hannah White, 62 King's Meadow-road.
