He was the son of Thomas and Sarah Bowmar and the brother of Joseph, Ruth, Lizzie and Thomas Bowmar. In 1901 they lived at 29 Portland Road Selston. John married his wife Seena Howard (born 10th October 1878) in 1904 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield Registration district they lived at 13 Magila Cottages North Anston Sheffield and 31 Doe Quarry Terrace, Dinnington, Rotherham, they had the following children, John Charles born 8th April 1905, William Walter born 3rd December 1907, Kenneth Howard born 20th December 1911 and Seena born 2nd August 1916. Following his death his widow Seena was awarded a pension of 25 shillings which commenced on 23rd October 1916.
He was a miner.

10th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private John William Bowmar enlisted at Worksop, Nottinghamshire, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went to France on 29th December 1915 and was killed in action, 14th February 1916, aged 32, during heavy German shellfire and the explosion of a German mine, prior to the German attack of the front line trenches, near the canal to the south-east of Ypres, Belgium. He is buried at Bedford House Cemetery, Belgium. Enclosure No.4 Plot 7. Row AA. Grave 32.
