Sam was born in Retford in 1895 and was the son of Samuel a pipe maker in local iron foundary and Clara Cook (nee Footit) Samuel and Clara had five children eldest was George followed by Sam, then younger brothers Alfred and Henry and finally their youngest , Agnes. In the 1911 census the family are living at 7 Little Lane Retford, Sam is 16 years of age , single and a labourer. he was the husband of Adelene , who following his death re married and became Adelene Harston and lived at 22, Wellington St., Retford, Notts.

10th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Sam enlisted in Retford and served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys Regiment ,his medal card states he first entered the France theatre of war on 16th December 1915 and he was killed in action on 14th February 1916.His body was never recovered and identified and therefore his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium
Two of his brothers also served during the Great War and survived :- George served with the Sherwood Foresters and Alfred of 2/8th battalion, Sherwood Foresters
