John Henry Keightley was born in 1885, baptised on 13th December 1885 at Heage Parish Church the son of William Keightly a coal miner hewer and Sarah Keightley née Swift. William Keightley was born in 1864 at Heage, Sarah Swift was born in 1865 also at Heage, they were married on 8th December 1884 and had two further children, William born 1910 and Elizabeth born 1914. John Henry married Violet Lancashire (born 12th December 1889 ) in 1906 at Mansfield they lived at Barns Yard, Forest Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire they had two children, William Henry born 2nd May 1910 and Uriah born 25th March 1914, In 1911 the family were living at 19 Short Street, Sutton in Ashfield, John 25 yrs is a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Violet 21 years and their son William Henry 11 months old. Commencing 2nd October 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence a week. His widow went on to re marry on 7th October 1916 to John Owen Roberts a coal miner, they lived at Stoneyford Lane Sutton in Ashfield.

Private John Henry Keightley enlisted at Chesterfield, Derbyshire on 27th May 1904 for 3 years service with the regulars and 9 years in the reserves, he was 19 yrs and 1 month and he was a collier, posted to the Sherwood Foresters and embodied for war on 5th August 1914. He went to France on 19th September 1914 and was killed in action on 20th October 1914, when the battalion held position south-east of Bois Grenier, Enetieres/Escobecques, France against a German attack.
