Harold William Raley was born in 1897 at Hackney, London and was the son of Albert William a cashier for a druggist manufacturer and Clara Annie Raley née Podfrey of 16 Chantry Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham. His father Albert William Raley was born in 1869 at Islington, London and his mother Clara Annie Podfrey was born in 1872 at Hornsey, London, they were married on 10th September 1894 at St Matthews Church, Westminster, London, they went on to have the following children, Reginald Albert b1896 Hackney, Harold William b1897 Hackney, Ernest Arthur b1900 Islington, John Alexander b1902 Islington, Edward Phillip b1903 West Bridgford, Sidney Frances b 1904 West Bridgford and Winifred Grace b1906 at West Bridgford. In the 1911 census the family are residing at 16 Chantry Road, West Bridgford and are shown as Albert William Raley 42 yrs a cashier at druggist manufacturer, he is living with his wife Clara Annie 39 yrs and their children Reginald Albert 15 yrs an assistant at a druggist manufacturer, Harold William 13 yrs a scholar, Ernest Arthur 11 yrs, scholar, John Alexander 9 yrs a scholar, Edward Phillip 8 yrs a scholar, Sidney Francis 7 yrs a scholar and Winifred Grace 5 yrs a scholar.

Private Harold William Raley enlisted on 1st March 1915 at Nottingham, giving the false age of 19 yrs (he was born in 1897 so was only 17 yrs of age) he gave his address as 37 Loughborough Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham and his next of kin as his father Albert William Raley of the same address. He was posted to the 7th battalion Sherwood Foresters, he embarked on 1st June 1916 and joined his unit in the field on 17th June 1916. Within two weeks he was killed on 1st July 1916 at the Battle of the Somme, he had served for 1 year and 123 days. He is buried in Foncquevillers MIlitary Cemetery
