He was the son of Joseph H and Carherine A Krause and the brother of Hubert Stuart, Henry Archibald, Frederick Lewis (killed in action 1/3/1917) and Percy George Krause. In 1911 they lived at 2 Collison Street Hyson Green Nottingham.

Private Joseph Leonard Krause enlisted at Derby and served with the 2/5th Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment , he died of wounds on 26th September 1917 and is buried in Brandhoek New Military Cemetery No 3 grave reference I H 28
His brother Private Frederick Lewis Krause, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 18th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment, he died of wounds on 1st March 1917. He is buried at Couin New British Cemetery.Grave Reference: B 19 Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour 16/10/1917: 'Krause. Died of wounds September 26th 1917 Pte Len Krause Notts and Derbys 2 Collison Street aged 19. - Deeply mourned by mother and brothers in France.'
