Fred Wilkinson was born in 1898 and was the son of George a lace machine fitter and Jane Wilkinson née Johnson of 10 Caulton Street, Radford Road, Nottingham. George Wilkinson was born in 1856 at Basford, Sarah Jane Johnson was born in 1858 at Collingham, they were married in 1876 at Nottingham and went on to have 15 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood, he was the brother of George, Harold, Frank, Ethel, Florence, Herbert, John, Nellie, Sarah Leonora, Jenny, William, Arnold and Joyce Wilkinson. In 1911 the family lived at 25 Pleasant Row Hyson Green Nottingham, George is 55 yrs and a lace machine fitter,
He was an engineers labourer upon enlistment.

10th Bn Durham Light Infantry
Private Fred Wilkinson enlisted on 18th August 1914 at Nottingham, giving his age as 17 yrs and 10 days, he was an engineers labourer, he initially served with the service number 4/4994 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was transferred to the Durham Light Infantry on 29th April 1916. He landed in France on 13th September 1916 and was killed in action on 27th September 1917. He is buried at Messines Ridge British Cemetery, Belgium
Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour 3/11/1917: 'Wilkinson. Killed in action September 27th Pte Fred Wilkinsom DLI aged 19. A noble sacrifice. - Mother, Father, sisters and brother Herbert and Jack (in France).'
