Samuel Read was born in 1884 in Sneinton and was the son of Thomas Read a curtain lace maker and Sarah Ann Read née Wyer of 146 Ilkeston Road, Radford, Nottingham. His father Thomas was born in 1854 in Sneinton and his mother Sarah Ann Wyer was born in 1855 also in Sneinton, married in 1882 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district. in the 1911 census they are shown living at 146 Ilkeston Road, Radford and they state that they have been married for 38 yrs and have had 6 children 2 of whom sadly died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were all born in Sneinton and were Thomas b1878, Lizzie b1879, Harriett b1882 and Samuel b1884. Samuel was the husband of May Read née Pegg. In 1911 they lived at 157 Rupert Street Meadows Nottingham, they are shown as Samuel Read 27 yrs an engine cleaner and May Read 26 yrs they state they have been married for a year and have no children. Samuel had a daughter Dora born 1st January 1915, at this date the family were living at 2 The Orchard, Gedling. Commencing 12th November 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.
In 1911 he was employed as an engine cleaner at an electrical lighting station.

10th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Samuel Read, enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Gedling he served with the 10th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 23rd April 1917. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
Death notices published 11th May 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “READ. – Killed in action, April 23rd, 1917, Private Samuel Read, Sherwood Foresters. – Deeply mourned by wife [May] and child. “READ. – Killed in action, April 23rd, Private Samuel Read, Sherwood Foresters aged 33. Deeply mourned. – Harriett, and William. “READ. – Killed in action, April 23rd, 1917, Private Samuel Read, Sherwood Foresters, aged 33. His duty nobly done. – From father, mother, brother, and nephew. “READ. – Killed in action, April 23rd, 1917, Private Samuel Read, Sherwood Foresters, aged 33. Deeply mourned.
