Horace was born on 30th May 1883 in Hucknall and was the son of Frederick and Emma Davis and the brother of Ann, Bertha (later Wilson) and Ernest Davis of 77 Duke Street, Old Basford, Nottingham. In 1901 they lived 43 Zulu Road New Basford and in 1911 at 3 Bright Street Radford (both Nottingham). His mother died on 6 January 1916 his father died on 18th July 1920.
In 1901 he was an apprentice joiner and in 1911 at dairyman.

Private Horace Davis, served with “D” Company, 12th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers He was captured and died of wounds as a prisoner of war on 2nd July 1917 and is buried in Mons (Bergen) Communal Cemetery, grave ref. VI D 1
Inscription family gravestone, Basford Cemetery, Nottingham: 'In loving memory of Emma the beloved wife of Frederick Davis who died Jan 6th 1916 aged (-) years. Also Horace the beloved son of the above who died of wounds prisoner of war in Germany July 2nd 1917 aged 34 years. Rest in Peace. Also Frederick Davis husband of the above who died July 18th 1920 aged (75) years. Also Ernest the beloved husband of (-) Davis, and son of the above who died (-) aged (-) years.' 'In memoriam' notice published 13th Ocotber 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “DAVIS. – Died of wounds, a prisoner of war in Germany. On July 2nd, 1917, Pte. Horace Davis, Northumberland Fusiliers, late of 77, Duke-street, New Basford. – Deeply mourned by his loving father, sisters, brother Ernest (in Mesopotamia), Doris and Vera. “DAVIS. – Died of wounds, prisoner of war in Germany, on July 2nd, our dear cousin, Pte.
