Jarvis was born in 1888 the son of Gervis (died 1916 aged 76) a lamp lighter and Hannah Widdowson (née Osinbrook). Married in 1883, their other children, all born at Ruddington were Mary (1884), Arthur Cooper (1885), Edward (1890), William Benjamin (1892) [died of wounds 1/4/1918], Annie (1894) and Lily (1897). In 1911 they lived at 135 Exchange Road Nottingham. Arthur Cooper was a private secretary, Edward a labourer, William Benjamin a plumber. They also had Martha Stokes a widow and her son William lodging. He was the husband of Lily (née Cole) Widdowson and the father of Gladys Widdowson.

Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour (abridged) 6/11/1918: 'Widdowson. In hospital abroad, of wounds received in action, Gervase AVC, son of Hannah and the late Gervase Widdowson, 119 Exchange Road West Bridgford. Third son to fall and one still serving.'
