William Wainwright (junior) was born on 22nd May 1875 at Nottingham and was the son of William (senior) a retired police sergeant and (Thirza) Annie Wainwright née Meats of 4 Melton Grove West Bridgford. His father William was born in 1846 at Woodhouse Eaves, Leicestershire, and his mother Thirza Annie Meats was born in 1841 at Hewton, Leicestershire. They were married in 1866 at Nottingham and went on to have the following children: Elizabeth Ann b1871, Annie b1873, William b1876, Hannah b1878, Edna b1897, Lucy b1881 and George b1883. All were born in Nottingham. William (junior) married his wife Edith Winifred Marriott (born 1881 Ipswich) on 22nd January 1902 at Nottingham. They went on to have a daughter, Dorothy Flora b1903 at West Bridgford. In the 1911 census William Wainwright (junior) is living at 46 Manor Street, Sneinton, Nottingham. He is shown as being 35 yrs of age and a clerk at a tool merchants stores; he is living with his wife Edith Winifred 30 yrs and their daughter Dorothy Flora 8 yrs a scholar. In the same 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 4 Melton Grove, West Bridgford and are shown as William 66 yrs a retired police sergeant, who is living with his wife Annie 70 yrs and their children, Elizabeth Ann 40 yrs a lace finisher, Annie 38 yrs a cutter and fitter for a dressmaker, Edna Page-Bell 32 yrs a widow, and George 28 yrs a traveller in wicker furniture.

Clerk 264355 William Wainwright enlisted on the 2nd July 1918 in the Royal Air Force. He was 43 yrs and his religion was Church of England. William was posted as a clerk to the Central Pay Office at Woking. He died of influenza on 13th November 1918 at the Woking Military Hospital and is buried in Nottingham Church Cemetery.

William Wainwright, R.A.F., the dearly beloved son of William and Annie Wainwright, of Melton-grove, West Bridgford. He giveth His beloved sleep.” 'In memoriam' notice published 13th November 1919, Nottingham Evening Post:- “WAINWRIGHT. – In ever loving memory of my dear husband, Pte. William Wainwright, R.A.F., who died November 13th, 1918.
