Person Details
He was the son of Stephen Lane, born in 1867 at Grantham Lincolnshire who worked as a coal hewer. His mother was Edith Lane who was born in 1865 at Nottingham. He was the brother of Emma, born in 1894 and Nellie, born in 1904. Both girls were born in Nottingham. The family lived at 93 King's Meadow Road Meadows Nottingham.

18th Bn The King's (Liverpool Regiment)
Lane initially served with 375 Coy. Northumberland/Midland Cyclists, though later he was posted to 18th Battalion, The King's Liverpool Regiment. He took part in the opening stage of the Battle of Arras and was killed in action. He was buried at Wancourt Military Cemetery.
Obituary published 15th May 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “LANE. – Killed in action, April 9th, Private W. Lane, of 93, King's Meadow-road. A noble life laid down.
