He was the son of James and Emma Dawson of Woodborough. He married his wife Louisa Elizabeth Humphreys at St Lukes Church, Nottingham on 21st July 1906, they went on to have three children , Constance Eveelyn born 10th July 1907, Claude Leslie b 10th December 1908 and Jesse born 7th September 1910 , all were born in Nottingham, they lived at 12 Pole Street, Nottingham. In 1911 they lived at 71 Pym Street St Ann's Nottingham and are shown as Jesse 28 yrs head of the family a commercial traveller , he is living with his wife Louisa and their 3 children , Constance 3 yrs, Claude 2 yrs and Jesse 6 months. Following his death his widow received a letter from the Ministry of Pensions dated 20th September 1917 informing her should would be receiving a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence aweek for her and her two children, with effect from 10th September 1917.
He was a commercial traveller.

Lance Corporal Jesse Dawson, was called up for service and enlisted at Derby on 2nd October 1916, he was 34 yrs and 3 months old, he gave his address at 12 Pole Street, Nottingham and his next of kin as his wife Louisa Elizabeth Dawson of the same address. He was posted to the 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, and landed in France on 13th January 1917 . He was killed in action 4th March 1917 and is buried in Foncquevillers Military Cemetery.
