Robert John Potter (junior) was born in 1885 at Carrington, Nottingham and was the son of Robert John Potter (senior) a lace machine fitter and Elizabeth Potter née Birch of 5 Hedderly Street, Union Road, Nottingham. His father Robert John Potter was born in 1858 at Nottingham and his mother Elizabeth Birch was born in 1863 at Nottingham, they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Robert John b1885, Richard Edwin b1886, Thomas William b1889, Arthur b1891, Frederick b1895, Percy b1897, and Evelyn Maud b1902 all were born in Nottingham. Robert John (junior) married his wife Gertrude Dunham (born 4th May 1887 Ardley, Yorkshire) in 1909 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district. They had 2 children, John Eric born 17th March 1912 and Kath Evelyn born 7th December 1914, they lived at 50 Manvers Street, Netherfield, Nottingham. In the 1911 census Robert John (junior) is living at 27 Plantagenet Street, Nottingham and are shown as Robert John Potter 26 yrs a fish mongers clerk, he is living with his wife Gertrude 23 yrs a machinist. In the same 1911 census his parents are living at 5 Hedderly Street, Union Road, Nottingham and are shown as Robert John Potter 53 yrs a lace machine fitter, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 48 yrs and their children Arthur 20 yrs an apprentice jeweller, Frederick 16 yrs a fruiters errand boy, Percy 14 yrs a printers errand boy and Evelyn Maud 9 yrs a scholar, also living with them is his widowed mother in law Ellen Birch 74 yrs of age.
In the 1911 census he is shown as a fish mongers clerk.

Private Robert John Potter enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters he was killed in action on 16th September 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
