He married Lucy Shaw at Nottingham in 1909. They had two children, Frederick and William. In 1911 they lived at 30, Beck Street, St Ann's Nottingham.
He was a a comb hand in the lace trade.

Ward's DCM was won while serving with 15th Battalion for his conduct during a German trench raid on 30th May 1916. It was Gazetted on 27th July 1916: “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. His Company Commander was wounded, but refused to leave his post. Pte. Ward remained with him. When the enemy were rushing the trench Pte. Ward was ordered to take a report to Bde.
