CWGC and UKSDGW records give his first names as 'Herbert Jones'.
Herbert was the son of William Henry and Mary Jane Sutton. There is a record of a William Henry Sutton marrying Mary Jane Hunt in 1889, marriage registered A/M/J Nottingham, and these two are likely to be Herbert's parents.
William and Mary had five children: Lily Gertrude (b. 1889 O/N/D), William Henry (b. 1891 A/M/J, d. 1906), Herbert James (birth registered 1893 J/F/M), Nellie Beatrice (b. 1898 A/M/J) and May Rose (b. 1900 A/M/J). All the children were born in Nottingham.
In 1891 William (28) and Mary (29) were living at 41 Manning Street, Nottingham, with their two children, Lily (1) and William (1 month).
By 1901 the family was living at 45 Manning Street; there were now five children, Lily (11), William (10), Herbert (8), Nellie (3) and May Rose (11 months).
Sadly, the eldest son, William, died in June 1906 aged 15; he was buried on 20 June 1906.
The family was living at 47 Manning Street 10 years later in 1911; the four surviving children were still living at home. Their father, William (49), was working as a brewer's labourer, Lily (21) was a lace pattern girl at Flersheim & Co, Herbert (18) was a brewer's labourer and Nellie and May Rose were still at school.
Herbert married Catherine Rossiter in 1915 (marriage registered A/M/J Nottingham). Catherine was the daughter of William and Eliza Ann Rossiter who in 1911 were living at 5 Lavender Street. Of their 13 children only eight had survived and seven were in the household on the night of the census: Thomas (21), Herbert (20), Catherine/Kate (18) a sewing machinist, Joe/Joseph (15), Mary (13), Leonard (6) and Winnie (11 months). By October 1914 when Joseph enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters, the family was living at 34 Leicester Street, St Ann's and this was Herbert's address at the time of his death in 1917.
