He was the son of Henry, a slater's labourer in 1901, and Ellen Austin. In 1901 they lodged at 132 Cardinal Street St Ann's Nottingham. Henry later lived at 5 Allington's Buildings Bath Street Grimsby. In 1911 George lived with his grandparents David and Mary Barnes at 138 Cathcart Street St Ann's Nottingham.

2nd Bn Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment)
Lance Corporal George Henry Austin, initially served with service number 17/27447 in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby) Regiment (Welbeck Rangers) later transferring to the 2nd Battalion The Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment), he was killed in action on 2nd June 1918. He is buried in Sandpits British Cemetery, Fouqueril.
aka Barnes after his grandparents with whom he lived for part of his childhood. Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged), 26 June 1918: ‘Austin Barnes. Killed in action June 2nd 1918, Lance Corporal George H Austin Barnes, 38 Cathcart Street, St Ann’s Well Road. Mother, father, sisters, Crissie and Polly and Charles in Palestine.’
