He was the son of William and Anna Burns of Ripley Derbyshire and the husband of Emily Ann (née Gamble) Burns. In 1911 they lived at 1 Brickyard Row Mansfield Nottinghamshire. His photograph was published on 26th August 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post. His home address was given as Somersall Street, Mansfield. His widow later lived at 16 Truman Street, St Ann's Nottingham.

7th Bn Leicestershire Regiment
Lance Corporal Edward Burns, served with the 7th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he was killed in action on 14th July 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme.
