Samuel Kirk was born in 1896 he was the son of William Moore a coal miner hewer and Matilda Jane Kirk, née Rogers of Skegness, Selston, he was the brother of Hannah Maria , Matilda, Thomas and Eliza Kirk. William Moore was born in 1848 at Selston, Matilda Jane Rogers was born in 1872 they were married on 6th July 1891 at St Helen's Church, Selston they had 5 children. In 1911 they lived at Skegness Selston, William Moore Kirk is 43 yrs and a coal miner, he is living with his children including Samuel 15 yrs a coal miner haulier
He was a miner (haulage).

1st Bn Cambridgeshire Regiment
Private Samuel Kirk enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Selston, he initially served with the service number 49253 in the Leicestershire Regiment, he later transferred to the 1st battalion Cambridgeshire Regiment, he died of wounds on 23rd September 1918 at the General Hospital at Bristol and is buried at St Helens Churchyard, Selston
