Francis Leonard Terry was born in 1893 in Hucknall and was the son of Thomas a coal miner and Emily Kate Terry née Clarke of 13, Abbey Grove, Nottingham. His father Thomas was born in 1864 in Hucknall and his mother Emily Kate Clarke was born in 1866 in Nottingham, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 7 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood, their children were Francis Leonard b1893 Hucknall, Edith b1894 Hucknall, Ella Larina b1896 Hucknall (she died 1919 aged 24 yrs ) Eric b1898 Hucknall and Edna b1902 Shirebrook, Derbyshire. In the 1911 census the family are living at Marshall Road, The Valley, Porchester, Nottingham and are shown as Thomas 47 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Emily Kate 45 yrs and their children, Francis Leonard 18 yrs a nurseryman, Edith 17 yrs a tailoress, Ella Larina 15 yrs a tailoress, Eric 13 yrs a school boy and Edna 9 yrs.
In the 1911 census he is a nurseryman

10th Bn Durham Light Infantry
Private Francis Leonard Terry, enlisted in Sheffield and initially served with service number 34867 in 13th battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, he later transferred to the 10th Battalion Durham Light Infantry He died of wounds on 18th April 1917 at No 2 Stationary Hospital and is buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, grave reference II E 23
Death notice published 30th April 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “TERRY. – Died of wounds received in action, April 18th, Bomber Francis Leonard Terry, D.L.I., dearly-beloved son of K. and Thomas Terry, 13, Abbey-grove, Nottingham, aged 24. O Lord it is hard to say Thy will be done. – From his sorrowing mother and father, sisters, and brothers.” In Memoriam published 18th April 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post : - “TERRY. – In loving memory of Bomber Francis Leonard Terry, D.L.I., died of wounds April 18th, 1917. Memory clings. – Fiancée Dora. “TERRY. – In loving memory of Bomber Francis Leonard Terry, D.L.I., died of wounds April 18th, 1917. Ever in our thought. – Maggie, Edith, and Lillie. “TERRY. – In loving memory of Bomber Francis Leonard Terry, D.L.I., died of wouds April 18th, 1917.
